Bobby Fischer vs Mikhail Tal, Title Challenger
Mikhail Tal, Latvian-Russian grandmaster, retained his lead in the closing rounds of the Challengers tourney to become the official FIDE challenger for the world title now held by Mikhail Botvinnik. The 24-game match between the two will take place next year.
In the closing rounds Tal drew with Petrosian, defeated Fischer, and drew with Benko, while his closest rival, Paul Keres, Estonian-Russian grand-master, defeated both Benko and Gligoric but in the final round fell to low-ranked Olafsson, of Iceland. Even if he had won he would have been half a point short of tieing Tal. The latter had a close call with Fischer in the penultimate round when Bobby went all out on a wild attack. Subsequent analysis may reveal that Bobby missed winning chances.
