The Russians are undertaking a series of tournaments in preparation for the great international matches scheduled this fall and winter. They are pointing particularly for the Challengers Round for the world championship duel.
The Russians hope to improve their record against International Grand Master Robert Fischer whom they opposed in eight games in recent tourneys without once defeating him.
Twelve competitors from six nations comprise the first of the matches. Included among the players are the stalwarts of Soviet chess: Smyslov, Keres, Tal and Petrosian. There is no reason to believe that a more mature Fischer will do less than his magnificent performance of last year.
