Fischer Retains U.S. Title
The 15-year-old Brooklyn marvel, Bobby Fischer, once more proved that he is top man in U.S. chess when he succeeded in retaining his national title in play at New York with a final score of 8½-2½ points. Among the twelve competitors, Fischer was the only one to go through without a defeat, winning six games and drawing five.
In second place, one point behind, came Samuel Reshevsky, veteran internationalist and many times U.S. champion, with 7½-3½ points. Reshevsky's one loss, to Fischer in the sixth round, proved to be the decisive encounter.
Fischer's win over Samuel Reshevsky was a vital one, even though achieved by an obscure opening trap in the Sicilian, which netted him the Queen for two minor pieces. Sammy carried the fight to the 42nd move before resigning the hopeless battle.
