Loss of Fischer in Argentina Prove Champ Is Only Human
To prove that he is human, International Grand Master Robert Fischer lost four games in the tournament at Mar del Plata, Argentina.
He finished after Miguel Najdorf of the Argentine and L. Pachman of Czechoslovakia, who drew for first. Fischer's losses were to Pachman, Raul Sanguinetti of Argentina, Boris Ivkov of Yugoslavia and Carlos Jaurengui of Chile.
His opponents in the Challengers Round next Fall will give these losses close scrutiny for signs of weakness.
In the Ivkov game, Fischer playing White ventured with 1. P-K4 which was met with the French Defense 1. P-K3, favorite response of World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik. After 52 moves, Fischer considered his chances hopeless and resigned.
The young American champion favored us with the published rushes of the scores with his comments...
After a tournament at Santiago, Chile, Fischer will fly to Zurich for a tourney in connection with the Jubilee Celebration of that city. The Russians will be waiting for him in force.
