Mikhail Tal, 23-year-old Latvian grand master, won the world challengers tournament at Belgrade. This earned him the right to meet world champion Mikhail Botvinnik, Russian grand master, for the title next year. Bobby Fischer, the 16-year-old grand master from New York, defeated former world champion Vasil Smyslov for sixth place.

BELGRADE Yugoslavia—(AP)—Mikhail (Misha) Tal a 23 year old Latvian grand master and newspaperman has earned the right to meet world chess champion Mikhail Botvinnik of Russia for the title next year.
Tal, a university graduate who has been playing chess since he was 12 beat seven other grand masters in the world challenger's tournament to determine an opponent for Botvinnik.
Bobby Fischer, 16 year old New York grand master, defeated former world champion Vasil Smyslov of Russia in the 54th move of their final match. Fischer has 12½ points, good for sixth place. He has a chance to finish in a tie for fifth depending on the outcome today of several adjourned matches.
