Tal Downs Fischer In Chess At Zagreb
Bobby Fischer, the 16-year-old United States chess champion, was defeated by Mikhail Tal of the Soviet Union in the twentieth round of the challengers' tournament at Zagreb yesterday.
According to a report from Yugoslavia, the Brooklyn schoolboy, conducting the black pieces, attempted some risky counterplay against the constant pressure applied by the tournament leader. Fischer's tactics failed and the game ended after thirty-four moves.
Vasily Smyslov, Soviet Union, playing white, drew with Fridrik Olafsson, Iceland, in thirty-six moves.
Adjournaments were taken by Paul Keres, Soviet Union, and Svetozar Gligoric, Yugoslavia, and by Tigran Petrosian, Soviet Union, and Paul Benko, New York.
