Bobby Fischer Ties For 3rd At Zurich
After being tied for first place at the end of the 13th round, the incredible 16-year-old Bobby Fischer lost the 14th round and tied in the 15th and final round.
With this bad luck (or play, as the case may be), Bobby finished the Jubilee Chess Tournament in Zurich in a tie for third place with Paul Keres.
Mikhail Tal, a 23-year-old Latvian born international grandmaster and two-time USSR champion, won the tournament with a score of 11½-3½.
Svetozar Gligoric of Yugoslavia, who had a chance to tie Tal, was held to a draw in 55 moves by Josef Kupper of Switzerland in their 15th round game. This left Gligoric in the runner-up position with a score of 11-4.
Paul Keres, the other representative of the Soviet Union, drew his games with Fridrik Olafsson of Iceland in 58 moves to gain the tie with Fischer with a score of 10½-4½.
The tournament formally wound up with the presentation of prizes at a reception in the Municipal Congress Building.
Bobby, whose resourceful play had made a deep impression on the other international grandmasters, was warmly applauded.
Bobby won eight games, drew five and lost two.
