Although too far behind to have any hope of catching the leaders, former world champion Vassily Smyslov appeared to have recovered from his disastrous slump in the early rounds. In his 21st-round game with Bobby Fischer, with whom he had drawn in the seventh and 14th rounds, he played a beautifully calculated defensive game after winning a pawn earlier, and managed to stay just one step ahead of Fischer's threatened attack.
