Youngster Near Top In Chess
BLED, Yugoslavia (CP)—Bobby Fischer the boy wonder of chess is among the leaders after four rounds of the challengers' tournament here.
The winner of this 28 round tournament will play Soviet grand master Mikhail Botvinnik next year for the title of world champion. The challengers comprise four Russians, one American, a Hungarian refugee, a Yugoslav and an Icelander.
Fischer the 16-year-old wizard from Brooklyn, N.Y., lost his first match to a Russian in his relatively short international chess career when he bowed Thursday night to Tigran Petrosian of Russia. Experts said Fischer played hurriedly and made a faulty move that cost him the game.
Previously, Fischer had beaten Russian players twice and battled them to draws five times in international play this year.
Friday night, Fischer scored a surprising victory over Svetozar Gligoric, the Yugoslav chess champion. Fischer played a Sicilian defence and Gligoric conceded after the 32nd move.
